James Iball

James Iball

James- Latin for ‘Happy, Snappy, Jokey Blokey’

An extremely, highly regarded, Land Rover Experience Lead Instructor, heading up ‘Beyond the Legend’ at Land Rovers Halewood Plant. James appears comfortable in whatever situation he finds himself in. Excellent photographer, communicator and teacher. Interacts well with border officials, village elders and poverty stricken families in Africa and still finds time to keep our own team spirits high! James Iball an African travel essential!

Kevin Mann

Kevin Mann

Kevin, an ageing expeditioner with a wealth of skills upon which we all relied in 2009. Kevin watched with caring eyes and calmly shared techniques with others to prevent damage to vehicles and the team. An Off Road instructor, first aid trainer and international expedition leader, Kevin is our Charity Champion for Sabre Charitable Trust.

A back problem forces Kevin out of the driver seat on our 2010 run, however he remains in the thick of it. Kevin will remain on home soil, running the ‘UK Office’ until we safely return, updating the website & blog and acting as an emergency point of contact from home and abroad.

Steven Smith

Steven Smith

Steve Smith is a carpenter by trade working in a boys’ school in Kent but he has taken his passion for Land Rovers beyond preparation of his own and his wife’s vehicles for competition to qualify in rebuilding various parts of various Land Rovers. Steve has spent time and meticulous planning to produce a vehicle to take himself and Caroline safely to Mali but also to feed the team from the back of the food truck all the way!

Caroline Smith

Caroline Smith

With 20 years of off road competition under her belt, Caroline is no stranger to taking Land Rovers off road. She has spent time as an Instructor for Land Rover Experience, a Demonstrator Driver at Land Rovers Adventure Zone at Bluewaterand can now be found as a booking and finance officer at tonbridge school sports centre.

Tyrefort to Timbuktu in 2009 was Carolines first overland trip. With the daunting task of feeding up to 18 people for over 3 weeks from the back of a Land Rover, has lead Caroline to take on a 130 double cab to convert to a complete mobile kitchen, to ease the next journey. Whilst not exactly Delia Smith, hunger pangs will certainly be unheard of with Caroline on board once again as our expedition cook.

Steven Docherty

Steven Docherty

A Joiner by trade and family man, Steve embarked on the 2009 trip hoping to share his master craftsman skills & knowledge to improve building techniques within the communities in Africa.

Inspired by the impact of their projects in Ghana in 2009, Steve returns on the 2010 Volunteer crew as Charity Champion for Village by Village.

Alex Smith

Alex Smith

Alex Smith joins the team on his first overland trip. One month away from his office in Tunbridge Wells, where he works in Management Accounts, will give Alex the opportunity to exercise the mechanic skills that he picked up after finishing his A-levels. Alex will assist with maintaining the vehicles on the trip and servicing the vehicles that were donated to the charities on the 2009 drive.

Jess Rumboll

Jess Rumboll

Jess will be taking time out of Manchester Metropolitan University to join the volunteer crew for 2010. Having had a years placement with The Land Rover Experience at North Yorkshire as an event co-ordinator, she is no stranger to the ‘off-road’ scene. Working towards a degree in Events Management, Jess will co-ordinate the paper work side of things for the team once we leave UK soil, with the aim to keep us moving swiftly through border controls and checks.

Anthony Bourne

Anthony Bourne

As Carolines older brother, Anthony (Ant) has thrown caution to the wind and plumped to travel the first leg of the journey in 2010 from the UK to Malaga then onto Marrakech.
Teamed up with cousin James, a double act is exactly what we get with every minute spent with Anthony and James. Tony as he is known amongst friends and colleagues, has to take up the ‘straight guy’ of the entertaining 2! Check out James’s profile and you’ll soon understand why! Anthony has thrown much of his spare time in to preparing 2 of the donation vehicles along with lending a supporting hand in preparation of the support vehicle currently funded by our dear Father….. Denis!!

James Thorogood

James Thorogood

YOUNG STUD! James Thorogood seems wasted (socially often is!) as a lines man for EDF Energy but maybe should consider a modelling contract with the company instead!!.
James has followed Carolines progress from a very young age in off road competition, his father with his love for Land Rovers having competed himself, before becoming a family man!
Ever entertaining James, was not a stranger to the limelight as a child actor , unfortunately (for us) seems never made it to the West End!!, but does continue to keep every one around him continuously entertained.(for Caroline he will always be ……one cheeky boy!!!!!)

Kevin Robinson

Kevin Robinson

Kevin Robinson, known as Kev or Couch by his friends is a down to earth 25 year old from Sunderland. He has a partner and beautiful daughter who he will miss very much while he is away on this charity drive however he is very much looking forward to the experiences he will face. As a mechanic who has been around cars since he was just 12 years old he will be a valued member of the team, though he hasn't yet qualified as a mechanic he assures the team that he could do the job with his eyes closed! Hopefully his dry sense of humour will help keep spirits high on our journey with whatever situations may arise!!

Kevin Robinson

Kevan Neill

Kevan Neill joins the team this year for the first time. Kevan has driven all over Europe and the Australian Outback. Recently Kevan drove a motorbike through 6 USA states in 6 days, finishing in Death Valley using only an A4 map! His ambition originally was to complete the Paris/Dakar. Kevan is also a Cubs & Beavers Leader with 2nd Haddington Scouts.

Steve Almond

Steve Almond

Called up a short notice to help out with the logistics of the trip; Steve Almond is also an avid off road enthusiast. Growing up in the sport of off road racing with his dad, & competing in trials compsafaris himself, he has known some of the crew members for as long as he can remember. Steve is a fully qualified Mechanic & his background stems such marques as Land Rover, Rolls Royce, Lotus, & Bentley. He also won the accolade of Young Technician of the year at the age of 18. Steve's other forte is removing people from Nightclubs, so although he is a big bad doorman, we shall see how he fairs in the open wilds of the Sahara! Steve is hoping to gain lots of experience on this trip so that he may return to assist on future charity drives.
